However, for any licence expiring on or after 1st October 2021, you must demonstrate that you hold the updated qualifications to be eligible for renewal.

Specifically, individuals renewing a Door Supervisor licence must complete the Door Supervisor Top-Up Training. Those renewing a Security Guard licence must complete the Security Guard Top-Up Training. It is important to note that the content and duration of these two Top-Up courses differ slightly to reflect the distinct responsibilities of each role.

Furthermore, regardless of whether you hold a Door Supervisor or Security Guard licence, all applicants for a new or renewed licence must now also hold an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification or equivalent. This must be a current qualification, typically obtained within the last three years, and from an approved training provider. What Does Top-Up Training Involve?

It equips operatives with the understanding needed to identify suspicious behaviour and what actions to take.
• Principles of Minimising Personal Risk for Security Officers: This covers topics such as risk assessment, conflict management, and personal safety techniques, ensuring operatives can protect themselves and others effectively.
• Legislation, Approved Conditions, and Health and Safety: A refreshed look at the legal framework governing security work, including relevant laws, approved conditions for security operations, and essential health and safety protocols specific to the private security industry.

For Door Supervisor Top-Up Training, there's an additional crucial component:

• Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry: This module updates operatives on the latest techniques for safe and effective physical intervention, including de-escalation, conflict resolution, and the legal implications of using force. This is a practical, hands-on component, ensuring competency in managing challenging situations professionally.

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification is a separate, mandatory requirement that must be completed before attending the Top-Up Training. It is a 1-day course that covers life-saving first aid techniques.

The duration of the Top-Up courses varies. The Security Guard Top-Up typically requires approximately 12.5 hours of training (excluding the EFAW), while the Door Supervisor Top-Up is around 18.5 hours (excluding EFAW), often spread over multiple days. These hours are in addition to the time spent completing the ACT Security e-learning module, which can be done beforehand.

How to Prepare for Your Top-Up Training

Preparation is key to a smooth licence renewal process. Here are some steps you should take:

1. Check Your Licence Expiry Date: Proactively identify when your current SIA licence is due to expire. The SIA recommends starting the renewal process approximately four months before expiry to allow ample time for training and application processing.
2. Complete Your Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course: As this is a prerequisite, ensure you have a valid EFAW certificate (or equivalent) from an approved provider. If your current certificate is nearing expiry or you don't have one, book and complete this training well in advance.
3. Undertake the ACT Security E-learning: This online course is free and a mandatory component of the Top-Up training. You can complete it in your own time prior to attending the classroom-based Top-Up course. Keep your certificate of completion as proof.
4. Find an Approved Training Provider: Only training centres approved by the SIA and regulated by an awarding body can deliver the Top-Up Training.
